Method & Data
We will identify whether the snow on the days to be analyzed was wet or dry through a data survey. After that, we will ensure the facts by ourselves.
-
Firstly, check the precipitation type, whether it was snow or rain, using the 1000-700 hPa thickness map.
-
Secondly, calculate the snow to liquid water ratio to determine whether snow was wet or dry.
-
Then, finally, identify the specific snow types with the diagrams of cloud zones with the temperatures at different altitudes from the weather charts.
All the data we use during analysis are from 'Open MET Data Portal'.
Expected Results
The type of snow on both January 4, 2010 and January 12, 2021 would have been wet snow.
However, the snow on January 4, which was heavy and caused severe damage, may be more similar to the case of large snowflakes than on January 12.
In conclusion, January 4 would have been more appropriate for snowmen building.
