Terminology

Snow depth

Snow piled up on the ground. The depth of snow accumulated on the actual ground at the time of observation, regardless of the duration of snow.

Snow to Liquid Ratio

snow water equivalent

The ratio of the amount of snow depth to the amount of water (precipitation) when snow is dissolved. The more moisture in the snow, the smaller the ratio.

  • Snow to Liquid Ratio = snow depth/melted liquid depth

Supercooled Water Droplets

It is liquid water that do not freeze below zero degrees Celsius. In clouds, supercooled water droplets stick to the ice sheet and become heavy, causing it to fall to the ground and become snow. Therefore, the more supercooled droplets, the more snow falls, and the volume of snow increases.

Ice Nucleus/Crystals

  • Ice nucleus: small particles of solid that are central to ice crystals.

  • Ice crystals: Ice crystals in the atmosphere formed on ice nucleus. The shape varies depending on weather conditions.

Thickness

Vertical thickness between two different barometric planes.

It represents the average temperature of a particular layer. Numerical values with high levels refer to warm air, while numerical values with low levels refer to cold air.

Depression of the Dew point

The difference between temperature and dew point temperature in the corresponding isobaric surface.
