2021.01.12 snow to liquid ratio calculation

  • Snow to Liquid Ratio = snow depth/melted liquid depth

  • Snow to liquid ratio can be a rough indicator of wet snow and dry snow. In theory, the ratio is lower than 10 for wet snow with relatively high moisture and higher than 20 for dry snow. The ratio between 10 and 20 is hybrid part.

  • Snow to liquid ratio on January 4, 2010 is relatively high compared to January 12, 2021.

  • However, the ratio is judged by a general definition and cannot be an absolute indicator. The snow to liquid ratio has many variables, so various factors need to be considered. Therefore, it is less accurate to distinguish the snow type only by snow to liquid ratio.

※ Snow to liquid ratio of Large Snowflakes
  • Large snowflakes are known as a typical example of wet snow.

  • But for large snowflakes to fall, it can't be too wet or too dry

  • The most important things are that the temperature inside the cloud is -5 ~ -20 °C,            and that the water droplets and ice crystals coexist to meet the conditions that are good for snow particles to grow.

  • Depending on the conditions, the snow to liquid ratio can be recorded over 15 to 30.
